UESTC’s Delegates at Global Youth Summit 2016

Global Youth Summit 2016, hosted by Alliance for Global Youth Leadership (GYL), was convened on July 30 in Beijing, with the theme of “Craftsmanship: innovation-driven global youth leadership”. Zhu Yongxin, Vice Chairman at the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democrac, and Rudolf Scharping, former German Federal Minister of Defense, as well as another 1,500 global youth leaders gathered at its opening ceremony and shared their views on craftsmanship. Professor Li Yanrong, President of UESTC and Professor Shen Xiaorong, Deputy Secretary as well as Professor Zhou Tao, head of Big Data Research Center were also present at the summit. Besides, 12 students from “Liren Class” of UESTC participated in this international event as southwestern delegates of YGL.

This two-day event included one closed forum, eight sub forums, 13 keynote speeches, a movie fan meeting and two banquets. Its themes were sharing new economic opportunities, striving for craftsmanship, developing innovative ways of youth leadership and exploring insights into big data. Prof. Zhou was invited to give a speech on big data at the sub forum of big data. More than 60 great minds were invited to give speeches, including Apple’s Vice President Ge Jun, IBM’s Vice President Zhou Yi, Minister Counsellor of Australian Embassy, China Pei Lisha and Sogou’s CTO Yang Hongtao.Winning focus and support from established corporations such as HNA Group, Baidu, Lenovo, Alibaba and Qihu 360, the Global Youth Summit 2016 gained the greatest global presence.

Academician Li Yanrong, President of UESTC made the first keynote speech at the opening ceremony. His lecture, titled “Craftsmanship and Innovation”, used “care, precision, excellence, leadership inheritance and focus” to explain craftsmanship. With “mass entrepreneurship and mass innovation” being the major theme of today, President Li also urged the young to understand and carry on craftsmanship as a way to develop industrial technology, which is the nature of entrepreneurial ecosystem. Besides that, he showed the audience present at the opening ceremony what UESTC, an industry-based characteristic university has done to reform and explore in terms of people, projects, enterprises and products, the four elements to build a talent pool and develop innovation. He also extended his warm welcome to young talents to visit Chengdu and UESTC in particular. President Li’s speech was well-received by guests and youth delegates.

At the sub forum “Interpreting the age of big data”, Prof. Zhou Tao discussed five different ways for entrepreneurs to use data at the age of big data. Furthermore, he touched upon the way to turn data into value, with the case of medical industry as an example. In his closing remarks, he shared his idea of cultivating a true talent. Individuality is indispensable for becoming a genuine leader. He hoped that the young combined individuality with interests and career to challenge the impossible, thus showcasing Chinese youth’s power to the whole world.
