International Conference on Language and Cognition (ICLC 2013) held in UESTC

On August 17, International Conference on Language and Cognition (ICLC 2013) which was co-organized by Graduate School and Lab for Cognitive and Neural Linguistics of School of Foreign Languages, opened on Shahe Campus,UESTC. 



Prof. Yang Xiaobo, vice-president of UESTC, Prof. Anderson, the famous linguist from Yale University, Prof. Keith, the renowned cognitive neurologist and distinguished professor under the Chinese National Qianren Scheme hosted by UESTC, Prof. Shu Dingfang, the chair of International Association of Chinese Linguistics and also the professor from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Prof. Feng Wenkun, dean of School of Foreign Languages, UESTC, and other important experts from more than 50 universities or institutes such as Peking University, Sichuan University, Institute of Linguistics under Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, etc. were invited to participate.

Prof. Yang Xiaobo extended warm congratulations on the convening of this conference and made a brief introduction on the subject features, the disciplinary expansion and the talents development of UESTC. He said that based on our strong electronic information technology, the link between language and neural information technology will provide a good and potential research orientation, and it was also a good opportunity to promote the academic exchange and development through this international conference.

Prof. Feng Wenkun, on behalf of School of Foreign Languages, expressed a warm welcome to all the experts and scholars to this forum. He said, closely focused on the topic “Research on Language and Cognition——Inheritance and Development,” this conference collected the latest achievements on language and cognitive science at home and abroad, and launched a high-level academic exchange from theory, experiment, application, philosophy and other different angles, which would surely inspire thinking, coagulate wisdom, and motivate original research on language and cognition.

Prof. Shu Dingfang extended his sincere thanks to the organizers. He said, the international exchange was beneficial to the study on language and cognition. And he encouraged Chinese scholars to go out to make more academic achievements and enjoy bigger influence.

This conference has also won a great deal of support from other co-sponsors such as Higher Education Press, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press.

There are altogether 15 invited reports and 82 academic papers which have been received upon the opening of this conference, mainly discussing theoretical research such as cognition grammar, construction grammar, image schema, etc., experimental research such as psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, experimental psychology, etc., applied research such as artificial intelligence, language teaching, stylistic analysis, etc., and philosophic research such as the essence of consciousness, the essence of mind, the temporal-spatial experience, etc., which comprehensively showed the new progress of study on language and cognition.
