UESTC won the national trials for the ABU Robocon for the fourth time

With a clean sweep, the robot team of UESTC won the national trials for the ABU Robocon 2015, qualifying our university for the final of ABU Robocon 2015 that would be held in Indonesia this August on behalf of China. It’s another success after our university’s robot team won the national trials for the ABU Robocon in 2010, 2012 and 2013, being the Asia-Pacific champion in 2010 and 2012.

The trail was held in Zoucheng, Shandong province from June 18th to June 21st, attracting more than 80 universities, including UESTC, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin Engineering University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Northeastern University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Southeast University, etc., to compete for the qualification for the Asia-Pacific final.

By virtue of advanced machine vision system, unique motion platform, real-time control and collaborative control, an intelligent and automatic process of match was successfully achieved. Having overcome the negative factors, including area, equipment, wind direction, etc, the robots worked well, reaching the level of a normal badminton athlete.

Having respectively beaten Southeast University and Xinjiang University in round robin match, and Hebei University of Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology and University of Science & Technology Beijing in knockout match, UESTC beat China University of Petroleum with a 5:2 win in the final.

After the final, there was a “man vs. machine” badminton match between the UESTC badminton robot and the world champion Dong Jiong, which reached another climax.

By the recommendation of Organizing Committee and the investigation of “ABU Robocon Innovation and Entrepreneurship Angel Fund”, the robot team of UESTC and the Angel Fund concluded an agreement of intention of investment. This remarks the accomplishment the conception of combining the robot match, scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

ABU Robocon is an annual handmade robot contest, which started in 2002 for university, college and polytechnic students in the Asia-Pacific region. Under a common set of rules, participants compete with their peers from other countries with hand made robots. This contest aims to create friendship among young people with similar interests, as well as help advance engineering and broadcasting technologies in the region.
