On October 31st, Mayor of Newport News, U.S. Jim Bourey and Vice President of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) led a delegation to UESTC and were warmly welcomed by Chairman of UESTC University Council Wang Zhiqiang, Vice President Xiong Caidongand the academician Liu Shenggang on Qingshuihe campus. Liu Chaoyu, one of our most distinguished alumni, President of SCNN, attended the meeting.

On behalf of UESTC and President Li Yanrong, Wang Zhiqiang expresses his welcome and briefly introduced the general situation of our university. In recent years, UESTC has worked hard to promote three development strategies— developing the school by talents, expanding the scope of the discipline and achieving internationalization. Our goal is to foster talents with solid knowledge, high competence, strong sense of social responsibility and international vision. During this process, it is necessary to strengthen the cooperation with American cities (such as Newport News) and US universities (such as Virginia Tech).

Jim Bourey pointed that what made people impressed was not only the beautiful campus of UESTC, but also the contribution made by UESTC to China’s electronic information technology and industry as well as the amazing achievements UESTC had gained. He expressed that further cooperation between Newport News and UESTC, especially in the field of scientific research, is needed.

Guru Gosh gave a brief introduction of the development history of Virginia Tech. By virtue of continuous innovation and effort, Virginia Tech has offered more and more humanities courses, gradually turning into a engineering-oriented comprehensive public university. Confronting new opportunities and challenges, Virginia Tech and UESTC should deepen cooperation on talent training and scientific research.

Liu Shenggang introduced his recent research and the general situation of School of Physical Electronics of UESTC. He hoped that there could be more cooperative opportunities between Virginia Tech and UESTC.

Professor Rolf Mueller of Virginia Tech, director of Virginia Tech Science Park, director of SCNN, directors of School of Political Science and Public Administration, School of Physical Electronics and Office of Int'l Cooperation of UESTC attended the meeting.
