President Li Yanrong gave “the last lecture” centered on “Strive for a Life of Brilliance” to all the graduates. With the upcoming 60th anniversary of UESTC, 197 Ph.Dgraduates, 3663 postgraduates and 4990 graduates had successfully fulfilled their school life and got the degrees. On behalf of UESTC, he delivered his sincere congratulations to all the graduates. In his speech, he said: “all the graduatesare like post cards ready to be sent around the world: you carry with you the postmark of UESTC sound remarks by UESTC teachers, the stamp of youth and vigor, and great expectations for the future. It is you, our beautiful postcards, which enable UESTC to enjoy her fame both home and abroad. You are where our every pride lies”

President Li also exhorted our graduates that university is a special place for them to live in groups during their transition from teenage years to youth. They need to encourage each other, to collide each other with new ideas, and to build team work spirit. They have experienced all these. In fact, romantic interaction between boys and girls is also very necessary. Then, he came up with three wishes: First, be brave to strive for success. Whether you are brave or not decides whether you can be a life winner or a loser. Bravery does not mean being impulsive and audacious. The Chinese character Chuang, meaning breaking out, is actually a horse shut in a door. Once he breaks out, he will embrace a wide expanse of flat land and beautiful scenery. But if he does not break through the gate and stride forward, he will forever be locked inside, stay where he is and have a very limited view. Secondly, remember to stand on the tide and to live a brilliant life. It’s not easy, because you are destined to come across troubles and turbulences. But if you are well prepared just before the tide comes and seize one or two opportunities, success will be yours. Nowadays, against the backdrop of a new round of global informatization, cloud computing, big data, the internet of things, mobile communication, and virtual reality…we are dazzled and overwhelmed by one wave after another. It is safe to say that until now there is no other subject area like the field of information that is so active, so dynamic and so ever-changing. Only by riding on the tide can one expand his life and live a more fulfilled life. Last, a complete life is to come, to experience, and to fight for what you want. Whether doing research or management or industry in the future, your hard work makes more people to be happier. That’s the meaning of life. Through your contribution, more people around you can live a better, more dignified and fulfilled life. This is also the meaning of life.

Then President Li added: “Being daring to strive forward is the strongest keynote of our times and the most vigorous power of the youth. The wish and wisdom to progress are most precious for human beings. So long as you surpass yourself and others, you are on the way to excellence!” last, he said: “Our students and alumni have all given their attention to the development of UESTC, which proves again we share the same identity: we all belong to the big family of UESTC. No matter where you are in the future, whether you have made great achievement or not, remember here is always your home.”

The vice-president Zeng Yong read the Commendation Notification about the 2016 Provincial and School Outstanding Graduates. Then, he suggested all the graduates, in the further study and job, keep an industrious spirit, strive to make breakthroughs and uphold the UESTC fine tradition——“great buildings and master scholars, ambition and accomplishments”. He encouraged our graduates to push their limits and pioneer a bright future. Li Sida from Yingcai Honors College of UESTC and other 94 graduates were awarded the outstanding graduates of Sichuan Province; and Tang Kaixuan also from Yingcai Honors College and other 674 graduates were awarded outstanding graduates of UESTC.

Tang Kaixuan, the first student, coming out from the fierce school audition, to make a valedictorian speech on the ceremony, said: “the four years in UESTC has carved into our mind. It is UESTC that teaches us to make bold dreams and determine to create an information world. Dear students, when we are striving to self-realization, please remember we all belong to the big family of UESTC. May the glory and dreams stay in UESTC forever!”

Cheung Kong Scholar and Professor Li Bin from School of Physical Electronics sent his letters to all the graduates themed on “Dreams and Perseverance”. Combing his 18-year studying, working and life experiences in UESTC, he said: “the bolder your dreams are, the broader stages that you will have. At the same time, we should minimize our dreams, so that we can spare little efforts to achieve them. Even once a little dream, but we will make great achievements with accumulative powers. Dreams without the nourishment of perseverance will definitely turn into bubbles. We should not cease our steps to run for the dreams in our heart.”

Wang Fengchao, CEO and deputy secretary of Sichuan Development Holding Co., Ltd, sent his best wishes to all the graduates. Graduated from the major of radio equipment in 1986, he suggested the juniors to remember four sentences: do not complain; start from trifles; keep passions when in work; see study as a habit. He said: “since you have mastered a system of in-depth knowledge and modern thinking modes, more brilliant than the peers, you should treasure your dreams and passions on your way to success.”

Vice-president Hu Haoquan read the namelist of outstanding students who were granted their deserved degrees. Chairman of Academic Degree Committee of UESTC and President Li and deputy secretary Wang Zhiqiang granted the graduation certificates to the provincial and school outstanding graduates as well as the representatives of Ph.D and master graduates.

They come from over 20 different countries and 12 schools, such as School of Communication & Information Engineering, School of Physical Electronics, School of Life Science and Technology and School of Information & Software Engineering. This year, we also have some new faces of 2016 graduated overseas students who come from Yemen, Somalia, Austria and Rwanda. It is said that almost all the overseas graduates would return to their home country to engage in teaching or researching. Over 40% overseas postgraduates have applied to have a further study in China or stay here to learn Chinese. Others will go back to their countries to work in super enterprises or governmental departments. Some may stay in China to have a job or work in multinational companies.

After the ceremony, the 2016 graduates were busy in taking photos with their students, teachers and parents and they were the last to walk out of the stadium. An undergraduate Yang Weikun from School of Mechatronics Engineering said: “Graduation does not mean an end. It is a new start. I pocket myriads of dreams, but what I have done to laurel them are far from enough. Like President Li exhorted us, we should embrace the society to strive for success.” A master graduate from School of Political Science and Public Administration Yuan Yue shared with us: “we are around the corner to kiss UESTC goodbye. But, the notion of “great buildings and master scholars, ambition and accomplishments” will be my life creed. I, together with other graduates will uphold the UESTC spirit.”

The college commencement and degree granting ceremony will be held one after another at the noon of on June 27 to 29.

The 2016 Commencement and Degree Granting Ceremony had a live broadcast on Sina weibo class, the official website of UESTC and plaza screen of the activity center in Qingshuihe Campus.
