Further progress was made in UESTC’s affairs of overseas students in the past year, with the number of students and their nationalities hitting all-time highs and the teaching quality further improved. In UESTC, the international students’ affairs not only meets China’s strategic demands and overall diplomacy but also serves for the Double First-rate higher educational construction and China’ s new demand of opening-up in education. It has earned its reputation of “studying abroad in UESTC” by its high education quality. On December 23rd a meeting was held for the education and cultivation of overseas students to summarize the work in 2016 and to deploy working plans in 2017.
In 2016, the first year of 13th Five-Year Plan, the international students of long-term programs in UESTC increased by 386 and the total number of overseas students from over 60 countries and areas reached more than 1000, 753 of which are now on campus, a record that hits a historical high.Also in this year four new bachelor’s programs taught in English for overseas students finally came into being, including MBA, Computer Science and Technology, Electronic and Information Engineering as well as Information and Software Engineering. And Fundamentals of Digital Communication was elected in the Second Year of List for Branding Programmes in Chinese Higher Education Institutions. 112 international students successfully graduated from UESTC in 2016, among which, Memon Muhammad Hammad, a PhD student, was elected as the “UESTC Outstanding Students” for publishing as more as 23 papers. The cultivation of high-level talents among international students serve as a backbone in the discipline evaluation and “Double First-rate” construction of UESTC. The “West Africa Research Center” and the “Israel Innovative Culture Research Center”, initiated by School of International Education and focusing on talents cultivation and the construction of research base between different areas and nations, established in Ghana the “Overseas Alumni Association in West Africa” so as to promote the cooperation between UESTC and universities and governments in west Africa.
Schoolof International Educationintroduced a set of international-student management system which has realized the integrated official business such as on-line application, campus management, information promotion, graduation audit, alumni management and etc. Abundant activities were held for international students, and their social influence has been further promoted. School of International Education hosted or supported over 50 activities designed for international students, co-sponsored or participated over 60 events held on campus. In the series of celebrations during UESTC’s 60th Anniversary, the overseas students in UESTC made an outstanding performance in China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition and Asia-Pacific Youth Dialogue Forum. Taking full advantage of the resource of international students so as to let them to serve the society, UESTC cooperated with the Chengdu Public Security Bureau and established the first Foreigner Volunteers Service Base in Chengdu. In addition, UESTC also founded the Overseas Students Teaching Base in Beichuan; set up Green Manor, a club for international students, with an enterprise in Daiyi to do the volunteering work for the society; co-organized the enterprise salon with industrial park in Hi-tech West Zone and has successfully brought up a start-up team. Meanwhile, the overseas students actively took various part-time jobs in different sectors on campus. So far, there are 44 international students working in Graduate School of UESTC and library as assistants. Events such as international students donating blood to save people or volunteering to patrol were reported by media from Sichuan or other provinces.
With the rapid extension of the scale of international students, the assurance condition in UESTC should be enhanced and the working system of faculty and staff responsible for overseas students’ education should be improved. Therefore, School of International Education planned to stabilize the scale of master’s and doctoral programs in the following 5 years and at same time to extend the scale of self-supported bachelor programs in multi-modes and a stable way. It hoped that all schools in UESTC can participate actively in the process of overseas students’ training program and innovate their training mode; it also encouraged them to make their own admission criteria and positively apply for teaching-reform projects of education for international students so as to provide more recourses for Branding Programmes in Chinese Higher Education Institutions; it hoped that the cooperation and joint-training programs between enterprises, partner higher institutions as well as governments should be enhanced , the construction of practice base on and out of campus further developed and the teaching quality as well as the quality of students improved.
