Delegation Led by Commissioner Xie Feng Visits UESTC

On April 10th, a more than 40-member delegation of foreign subsidiaries in Hong Kong, chamber of commerce and media led by Xie Feng, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region paid a visit to UESTC for inspecting research accomplishments on artificial intelligence achieved by HeFu Institute of UESTC. Their visit was in the company of Zheng Li, Secretary of Party Committee and Director of Department of Foreign and Overseas Chinese (Hong Kong & Macao) Affairs, Sichuan Provincial People’s Government, Tang Rui, Deputy Director of Department of Foreign and Overseas Chinese (Hong Kong & Macao) Affairs, Sichuan Provincial People’s Government, and Wang Yafei, Secretary of Party Committee of UESTC, Shen Xiaorong, Deputy Secretary of Party Committee of UESTC. UESTC is also the only university visited by the delegation during their stay in Sichuan Province.\

In his remarks, Xie Feng praised highly UESTC as a university with picturesque scenery and time-honored history. And it is a cradle of brilliant talents. It is a great pleasure for them to visit UESTC. Xie Feng clearly indicated his full recognition on the research achievements in the field of artificial intelligence made by institutes of UESTC in recent years and appreciations for the wisdom and hard work who dedicated themselves into the course of science and technology. He added that, with the continuous enhancement of globalization, innovators of science and technology should uphold the style of hard-working and stay open-minded. Innovations in science and technology should not only serve for the convenience of people’s daily life, but also contribute to the global economic development and the world peace. This belief happens to coincide with UESTC’s motto of “great buildings and master scholars, ambition and accomplishments”. “We hope to promote further in-depth cooperation between UESTC and Hong Kong,as well as between UESTC and relevant institutions of all countries and to continuously make fruitful achievements through this visit and exchange.

Wang Yafei, on behalf of UESTC, extended warm welcome to the delegation. Then he introduced history of UESTC and achievements made in discipline construction, social service, and international cooperation etc. in recent years. He said, by deepening the implementation of  the University and Belt Initiative , UESTC have cultivate awareness and stimulate capacity in innovation and entrepreneurship among faculties and students, of which in turn generate a number of scientific and technological achievements that benefit economic and social development. Meanwhile, UESTC adhere to the principle of open education and regard “internationalization” as an important strategy for development. Nowadays, UESTC is pacing up in developing UESTC into a world-class university. We will keep being open-minded and sincerely hope that establish closer exchanges and cooperation ties with universities and enterprises in various countries through the publicity of friends, especially the media.

Prof. Zhou Tao, director of Big Data Research Center, made brief introduction on the center to guests. Then he mapped out application scenarios of big data by taking urban management and education as examples. In his view, Hong Kong has the advantages of talents and policies, and they can make use of vast market of the mainland. I hope that both parties will combine their respective advantages and establish closer cooperation to jointly create a bright future.

Zhou Jinting, alumnus and Dean of HeFu Institute of UESTC introduced basic information of the Institute, layout of artificial intelligence and representative achievement in AI field to delegation in No.5 Makerspace. Afterwards, some members of the delegation played badminton with “Xiao Yu”, a badminton robot, at the court. In the man vs. machine battle, “Xiao Yu” won applause of members of delegation for its accurate capture, swift movement and powerful hit. Yao Shidi, Executive Director of Australian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, was the first player to matchup with “Xiao Yu”. She said, this is an extraordinary experience and the swift and flexible performance of “Xiao Yu” impressed her much.

Representatives participated in above activities were as follows: Wang Hai’en, Consul-General of Britain in Hong Kong SAR, Harris, Consul-General of South Africa in Hong Kong SAR, Browning,Consul-General of Australia in Hong Kong SAR, Asi, Consul-General of Thailand in Hong Kong SAR, Hamas,Consul-General of Nigeria in Hong Kong SAR, Chen Qingxun, Consul-General of Vietnam in Hong Kong SAR, Kim Chen, Consul-General of South Korea in Hong Kong SAR , Principals of American Chamber of Commerce, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong SAR, Heads of Department of General Affairs, Department of Policy Research and Department of Media and Public Relations of Office of Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong SAR, Heads of Campus Office and Division for International Cooperation and Exchanges.

During the visit, media in various countries reported the badminton robot invented by UESTC as representative research achievement in the field of AI, which are, Xinhua News Agency, China Media Group, China Daily, China News Service, Phoenix TV, Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group,Kyodo News Agency, Swiss Economic and Financial News, Singapore Zaobao and mainstream media of Sichuan Province.

From April 8th to 12th, delegation of foreign subsidiaries in Hong Kong, chamber of commerce and media led by Xie Feng, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region paid visits to Sichuan Province.
