Liu Shenggang Attends SICAST 2011

The 3rd Shenzhen International Conference on Advanced Science and Technology (SICAST 2011) was held at Shenzhen University from November 21 to 27. The theme of the conference was terahertz science and technology. Academician Liu Shenggang from UESTC attended the conference and delivered the opening and closing speeches.

With UESTC as one of the organizing institutions, the conference is a biennial international academic gathering series, which was started in 2006 with the personal efforts of Prof. Liu Shenggang, Member of the Chinese Academy of Science, commissioned by the State Foundation for Natural Sciences and the Municipal People’s Government of Shenzhen City. Terahertz Science and Technology (TST), an online international academic magazine, is the only platform on which excellent SICAST papers are to be published. Prof. Liu presently serves as the conference chairman. So far, the SICAST has drawn much attention from the international academic world, and known to scholars at home and abroad as China's miniature of the Gordon Research Conference, it is becoming a conference with important international influence and reputation and one of the important windows to the frontlines of scientific development in China and in the world.

On the morning of November 22, the opening ceremony was solemnly held in the Lecture Hall of Shenzhen University Library. Prof. Xie Weixin, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and former President of Shenzhen University, declared the opening of the conference. Prof. Liu Shenggang, Chairman of the International Organizing Committee, delivered the opening speech. Other prominent figures also made speeches at the opening ceremony, including Li Jinghai, Vice-president of the Chinese Acadeny of Science, Academician Chen Jiaer, former Chairman of the State Foundation for Natural Sciences and former President of Peking University, and Mr. Zhang Zhaotian, Director of Information Science, the State Foundation for Natural Sciences. President of Shenzhen University Du Hongbiao also delivered a speech, expressing his congratulations on the opening of this international academic event. Moreover, Dr. Guo Aiping, President in charge of TCL' a telecommunication technology and Executive Director, and Dr. Huang Xiaoqing, Director of Research Institute of China Mobile Communication, made speeches on behalf of the enterpreneurs attending the conference, both expressing their congratulations on this gatherting and their wishes for terahertz science and technology to become the technical pillar supporting the fifth and/or the sixth generations of mobile communication industry. The opening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Thycodam Varkkey George, Co-chairman of the International Organizing Committee.

Over thrity internationally renowned scientists and academicians from eight different countries who wor in the terahertz field were invited to attend the conference, including Prof. Daniel R. Grischknowsky from the USA, winner of the 2011 Kenneth J. Button Prize. The conference arranged for fourteen lectures by specially invited guest speakers and twelve keynote speeches by young Chinese terahertz scholars.

After the speeches, representatives had in-depth  discussions and exchanged ideas on basic research and applications of the terahertz science and technology. They also talked about the present situation and future visions of the terahertz develpoment, and expressed their opinions and suggestions on how to improve the SICAST. At the closing ceremony, Prof. Liu Shenggang made a summary of the conference and expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the participation of the representatives and for all the efforts the Local Organizating Committee had made to guarantee the success of this conference.
