According to reports recently released by the official website of MCM/ICM (The Mathematical Contest in Modeling/The Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling), UESTS students have once again gained the Outstanding Winners award for the year 2012 as they did in 2011. They have also received a Meritorious Winners awards and ten Honorable Mentions.

The Outstanding Winners are a team of three students Guo Fangjian, Su Jiang and Gao Jian from UESTC School of Computer Science under the tutorship of Prof. Zhou Tao, sharing the highest title with another team of six students from Cornell University for best overall performance on ICM. Previously, UESTC students won the top MCM/ICM awards twice, the first time in 2004 and the second time in 2011. UESTC has become the third Chinese university to do so for two successive years after China University of National Defence Science and Technology and Zejiang University.

The 2012 MCM/ICM has attracted 15,078 students in 5026 teams from China (UESTC, Tsinghua University, Peking University and Zejiang University), the USA (Harvard, West Point Military Academy, MIT, Cornell, etc.), and other fourteen countries and regions. The contest this year has produced seventeen Outstanding Winners awards, accounting for only 0.3% of all participating teams.

The contest consists of MCM (Mathematical Contest in Modelling) and ICM (Interdiscipinary Contest in Modelling), co-sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund and the US Mathematicas and Its Applications Association, and supported by other organizations such as Institute for Operations Research and the Management Science (INFORMS) and Society for Industry and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). An internationally well-known contest meant for undergraduate students worldwide to participate, it is known as the Olympics in mathematical modelling. Undergraduate (or high school) students compete in teams of three for four successive days during which each team tries to solve assigned problems by building and validating a mathematical model and finally submiting to the organizaing committee a thesis of about 20 pages in smooth and clear English. Since 1985, the contest has been held twenty-eight times. With its outstanbding performance, UESTC presently ranks third among Chinese universities for the total numbers of the Outstanding Winners awards received.
