★ 1. History and Timeline
The School of Optoelectronic Science Engineering has originated from an earlier program of Electrical Vacuum Devices, which was established at UESTC with an aid from the former Soviet Union dated back to the year of 1956. It was among several of the earliest programs initiated in China to research on laser and optoelectronic technologies. The Department of Optoelectronic Technologies was built in 1979. In 1998, according to the new major classification of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the China State Education Commission, the prior National Key Discipline of China, i.e. “Physical Electronics and Optoelectronics” was reconstructed as the program of Optical Engineering. In the same year, the program of Optical Engineering was qualified to grant the primary discipline master’s and doctoral degrees. The School of Optoelectronic Science Engineering was then constructed in 2001. Its program of Optical Engineering was selected as the Key Disciplines of Sichuan Province in 2004, and to the Cultivation Program of National Key Disciplines of China in 2007.The program of Optical Engineering has been ranked No. 7 in the recent discipline evaluation by China Ministry of Education in 2012.In December 2017, establishing school of ophotoelectric science and engineering according to the national "double top" construction requirements. On January 18, 2018, school held its founding congress.
★ 2. Scientific Research
Our program of Optical Engineering has been organized into four core research areas as described below.
(1) Optoelectronic Detection and Sensor Integration: This area is focused on uncooled infrared detectors, terahertz detections, and optoelectronic biochemical sensors, and sensing technologies for Internet of Things. Research in this area has been led by Prof. Yadong Jiang. Our program is in a leading position in China in the area of uncooled infrared focal plane detectors and gas sensors, which have won us 4 national and 6 Provincial/Ministerial Science and Technology Innovation Awards.
(2) Optical Communications and Integrated Photonics: This area concentrates on optical waveguides, microwave photonics, and mid-infrared fiber lasers. The program is led by Prof. Jiancheng Zheng and Prof. Yong Liu. Recognized innovations achieved in this area include technologies for all optical wavelength routing, optical analog to digital conversion, and mid-infrared pulsed fiber lasers.
(3) Information Display: This area mainly studies the OLED, LED and LCD display technologies, solid state lighting, laser and virtual reality display, and photovoltaic devices. The program covers a variety of studies from basic materials, devices to system modules, and is led by Prof. Mao Ye. Our research achievements in this area have been reported in a series of influential international journals such as Adv. Mater., PNAS, Adv. Energy Mater., Sol. Energy Mater. Sol. Cell, and Appl. Phys. Lett. etc., which have won us international recognitions especially in the area of OLED and photovoltaics.
(4) Laser and Optoelectronic Engineering: This area focuses on optical instrumentations, non-invasive testing technologies, and optoelectronic image processing. The program is led by Prof. Bincheng Li, Prof. Andreas Mandelis, and Prof. Xiaoli Xiong. Our innovation in Electrical Vacuum Propulsion technology has made significant contributions in national defense. In addition, our program is widely recognized on the Laser Induced All Optical Carriers (LIC) in semiconductor theory, high precision measurement on optical reflectivity, and video driven human face and behavior recognition.

★ 4. Outstanding teacher resource
School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering has strong scientific research, teaching conditions with nearly 8,000 square meters’ scientific, teaching base including the National Engineering Research Center of “OLED Technologies”, and other 6 Key Laboratories of State/Ministry/ province. School has won 7 Provincial/Ministerial Science and Technology Innovation Awards (one State Technological Invention Award, six Ministry/province Awards). More than 350 SCI academic papers have been published and more than 540 National patents have been applied.
