UESTC Has Added Five New Undergraduate Majors

Recently, the Ministry of Education has announced the results of the registration and approval of undergraduate majors in general colleges and universities in 2018. The five majors submitted by the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), including Artificial Intelligence, Robot Engineering, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Data Science and Big Data Technology (Science), were all approved. Among them, the Artificial Intelligence is a newly established specialty, and a total of 35 colleges and universities in China have obtained the first batch of construction qualifications. Previously, UESTC was enrolled in the major of Data Science and Big Data Technology (Engineering) and enrolled students.

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been included in the national strategy. The 19th CPC National Congress report, the State Council and the Ministry of Education have all given instructions, and the Sichuan Provincial Government has issued an AI development implementation plan. The aim of setting up AI major is to face the important strategic development goal of AI in China, actively respond to the strategic requirements of AI in China, Ministry of Education and Sichuan Province, lay a foundation for training high-end hardware and software engineers in the field of AI, application architects of AI interdisciplinary, innovative entrepreneurs in the field of AI, innovative entrepreneurs in AI algorithm research and theoretical innovation talents, and make up for the top talents in Sichuan Province as well as the country's high-end AI talent demand gap. UESTC built up a batch of national, provincial key laboratories and innovation platforms, including national and local joint engineering laboratory of next-generation internet data processing technology, trustworthy cloud-computing and big data key laboratory of Sichuan province, institute of intelligent systems and information technology, institute of intelligent learning science and application, and the robotics institute and the statistical machine intelligence and learning laboratory, which guaranteed the development of high-level teaching and research team, scientific management experience for the construction of AI major with talents and a healthy system.

Robot Engineering is an emerging discipline which is intersected by Artificial Intelligence, Electronic Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology. For many years, School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering has relied on the advantages of electronic information technology to develop mechanical engineering talents training with mechanical and electrical integration. Since 2002, it has started innovative education with robotics technological innovation competition as the traction. In 2015, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering applied for project approval and began to officially recruit students in the following year to train talents for the construction project of the Special Zone - "Robot Experimental Class". Aiming at cultivating high-quality compound talents with working skills engaging in robots field, innovative spirit and practical ability, and strong international communication ability, the Robot Engineering major can use robot professional knowledge and engineering principles to study and solve complex engineering technology problems in Robotic Engineering related fields. It can also take into account factors such as economy, environment, law, safety, health, ethics and so on, so as to cultivate key force and leading talents in robotics research field.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and its application is the product of the integration of modern high-tech systems. As an important dual-use product, UAV not only reflects the technical development level of the country in the field of UAV, but also is one of the important indicators to measure the overall capability and level of the national aviation industry. Its development is related to national security and national economic development. Aiming at the country’s high demand for talents in the direction of building new air force, cultivating new economy and constructing new engineering disciplines, and giving full play to the advantages of UESTC in the fields of "electronic information+ and "artificial intelligence+", the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics is fully committed to making preparations for the setting up of the Unmanned Aerospace Vehicle Systems Engineering Major, and building a feature specialty of intelligent UAV design and development, which takes the application of unmanned aerial vehicles as the carrier and integrates information, control and Artificial Intelligence, so as to support the characteristic development of the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

The industry of new materials is one of the emerging national strategic industries, and it is the breakthrough for the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial innovation. Electronic information functional materials are the key to the development of artificial intelligence, quantum computing and other new-round electronic information technologies. "Electronic information + new materials" represented by material genetic engineering is the direction and way out of the future development of Materials Science and Engineering. Materials Science and Engineering Major takes electronic information technology as the background so that students can master solid basic theories of natural science and humanities and social sciences, and have professional knowledge in the design, preparation, performance analysis and control, and application of electronic information functional materials, aiming at cultivating high-level leading talents in new materials and related electronic engineering fields with electronic information technology as the background.

The Major of Data Science and Big Data Technology (Science) combines traditional statistics, big data and computer technology, aiming to cultivate innovative compound elite talents with excellent Internet thinking, solid statistical analysis and computer skills. On the basis of emphasizing theory and technology application, this major lays more emphasis on students' ability of data modeling, data analysis and data prediction.

After years of development, the School of Mathematical Sciences has big data innovation talents and the high-level academic leaders of the teachers’ troop, relevant teaching and research teams at the national and provincial levels, as well as advanced hardware and experimental platform foundation, which provides all-round preparation for the establishment of the Major of Data Science and Big Data Technology, such as talents, teams, technology and resources.

So far, UESTC has opened a total of 63 undergraduate majors, covering science, engineering, medicine, management, economics, law, education, literature, art and other disciplines. UESTC closely connects the innovation chain and industrial chain, actively grasps the new needs of technological and social development during new scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, and the new trend of interdisciplinary integration. Centering on "intelligence +", the university strives to build the major ecosystem of "new engineering" and explore the characteristic development path of "new engineering" construction.

At the same time, in order to further optimize the structure of the major, UESTC voluntarily applied for the cancellation of eight non-enrolling majors, such as Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Technology, which was all approved by the Ministry of Education.
